Emy Christmas Day Swim

Blue sky, sun shining, cool air, barely a ripple on the water, this was the scene on Christmas morning at Emy Lough approaching 12 o’clock as people began to arrive for the annual swim. The swim in aid of Monaghan Parents and Friends of those with an intellectual disability as has been the case for many years. This was the 41st year of the swim, as most would agree on. But this is more than an annual swim, this is a Christmas event, for so many people Christmas just wouldn’t be the same without a visit to Emy Lough on Christmas day. This clearly evident with the large numbers who come to support the swim each year.

The Parents and Friends firstly and foremost would like to thank the swimmers who really amaze and impress me each year; it takes courage to plunge into the icy water. Without their support and their generous sponsors our work would be greatly curtailed. Some of this year’s money is going towards the launch of a website and facebook page to give people support and information about organisations at a local and national level. More about this at a later date. Each year up to at least 48 swimmers take part with at least 100-150 people coming in support.

The Parents and Friends would also like to thank those who help to make this such an enjoyable event. Victor Waterson, Joe Mc Kenna and the Civil Defence who look after the safety of everyone. Castle Leslie who supply soup each year for everyone, much appreciated by the swimmers as they emerge from the cold waters. Sammy has been a generous supporter in not only supplying the soup but in taking part in the swim herself and taking many others who are staying in the castle over the festive period.

But this event would not have such a buzz, a really enjoyable hour or two without our compare Peader Mc Mahon who injects the fun into the occasion. The day is also recorded by Murphy Videos who supply Emyvale.net with photographs and Rory Geary is always on hand to cover the swim for the Northern Standard. We thank you all.

Lastly, I would like to remind those with outstanding sponsorship cards and monies to return them as soon as possible to a committee member or contact Orla on (087) 7595993.

We look forward to seeing you all again next year.
